Each year, the International Council
of Air Shows presents the Art Scholl Showmanship Award
to the air show act that best exemplifies the qualities
of showmanship demonstrated by Art Scholl.
Art Scholl was killed while filming a
flying sequence for the movie “Top Gun” off
the California coast on September 16, 1985. Art was a
renowned pilot and consummate air show performer. He flew
his Penzoil Chipmunk aircraft before an estimated audience
of 80 million people over 20 years and appeared in more
than 200 motion picture features, documentaries and television
commercials.
His exacting, exciting and always entertaining
performances were a reflection of the best in our air
show industry. He was a dedicated professional who practiced
tirelessly to get the most from himself and his airplane.
His unique blend of pilot skills and showmanship always
left audiences wanting more. Throughout his career, he
set a standard by which all other air show performers
have since been measured.
The list of past recipients includes the
names of our industry’s finest performers and is,
by itself, a fitting tribute to Art.

Bill
Barber Award for Showmanship
Each year, since 1986, the Bill Barber Award for Showmanship
has been presented to an outstanding performer in the
industry.
Bill Barber, a famed air show pilot and entertainer had
a regal bearing amidst enormous skill and kindness. Bill
performed many different acts in a wide variety of aircraft,
often times at the same air show. He once performed 14
different air show acts during a two-day show, which prompted
one aviation writer to dub him "Aerobatic Flying's
Renaissance Man" and another, "The One-Man Air
Show."
Bill had a deep and demonstrated understanding of the
entertainment aspects of the air show business. His energy,
talent, friendly demeanor, and approachability endeared
him to air show fans and air show pilots alike.
This award is given to the performer who emulates the
qualities of this great pioneer, while also being know
as a great artist in their own right. The list of recipients
represents the very best in the air show industry.
